Arthritis Management Q & A

What is arthritis?

Arthritis actually describes more than 100 conditions that affect your joints. It can affect people of any age but is most often seen as you get older.

The following categories of arthritis are the most common:

Degenerative arthritis

Osteoarthritis is the most common form of degenerative arthritis. With osteoarthritis, cushioning between your bones – known as cartilage – begins to wear down and causes your bones to rub together. Osteoarthritis can occur due to wear-and-tear, aging, or prior injury to a joint.

Inflammatory arthritis

Inflammatory arthritis is an autoimmune condition. Your immune system attacks your joints, causing uncontrolled inflammation that makes you feel stiff and in pain. The most common examples of inflammatory arthritis are rheumatoid arthritis and psoriatic arthritis.

Infectious arthritis

Infectious arthritis is less common. It’s diagnosed when bacteria, fungi, or a virus enters your joints and cause inflammation. Food poisoning, chlamydia, hepatitis C, and gonorrhea are often the foreign substances that are responsible.

Metabolic arthritis

When you have high levels of uric acid in your body, painful crystals form in your joints. This causes gout, a form of metabolic arthritis.

What are the symptoms of arthritis?

Arthritis symptoms are similar in all forms of the disease. Suspect arthritis if you have:

  • Joint pain and stiffness
  • Joint swelling and tenderness
  • Decreased range of motion
  • Loss of function

Arthritis can show up in any joint, but is commonly noticed in the major joints of the knees, hips, shoulders, and back. If you suspect arthritis, call the providers at Cornerstone Primary Care right away. The sooner you treat joint disease, the more successful you’ll be in stemming, and even reversing, its progression.

Dr Pirkle is everything I would want in an internist: exacting, accurate, kind and current. My medical care has been a team sport. Dr Pirkle has lead and formed that team. I have never been disappointed in a specialist Dr Pirkle has recommended. I believe quality medical care all starts and ends with an excellent internist, otherwise there is no cohesion. I highly recommend Dr Ross Pirkle.

What I love about Dr Pirkle is that he takes the time to understand the problem. I never feel rushed. He is thorough and caring and provides reminders about getting vaccines and other tests with other Specialists. The staff is friendly and responsive and will get you an appt quickly if necessary. So glad I switched to his practice!

-Therese W.

My experience with Dr. Pirkle has been excellent. It was recommended that I see him many years ago. He persisted with testing until the problem was diagnosed and the solutions found. He did some extra work on the treatment of this unusual (at the time) disease and sent lots of info to me to help with the dietary treatment. Since then he has been supportive and available to me in the hospital and the office. I highly recommend him to anyone.

-Ellen P.

The office staff puts one at ease with their friendliness. Maricela, the medical asst. is above reproach and then, best of all is Dr Bernens, who doesn’t leave a “stone unturned”! He’s the best! If you want to be well or need to “get well”, he IS the doctor! Kind, gentle and caring. My family loves him!
